Scholarship Foundation's First Annual Fundraiser Surpasses Goal In Spite of Rain The Jaxson William Augustus Swank Scholarship Foundation hosted its first annual fundraiser, the JWAS Fun Fair, on July 19th in Syracuse, Indiana in hopes of raising at least $25,000 to help underprivileged children with their educational pursuits from preschool through college. See the WSBT interview with Larry and Sherry Swank prior to Fun Fair by clicking here.

After a mere six weeks of planning, a group of over sixty volunteers managed to pull off what many anticipated could not happen because of the obstacles that often interfere with the good intentions of non-profit organizations. What started as a private family tragedy has become a celebration of life, youth, fun and long-term commitment to education. Because of the enormous support and involvement of the community, press, family, friends, even employees of the family's privately owned company, The Sterling Group, they were able to accomplish not only the goal, but beyond. In fact, the dollars are still rolling in as people continue to network and speak about the tremendous focus of this foundation to give a gift in the aftermath of such loss.

When Jaxson died in the tragic SUV accident over four years ago, no one dreamed, especially his grieving parents that beyond the grief, would lay an opportunity for giving, healing and tribute. When a family moves beyond the boundaries of grief and good intentions, it causes a community to take notice – as occurred at this event.

Children were playing in bounce houses, slid down a giant wet slide, they road ponies, pet animals, had their faces painted and played carnival games, participated in crafts, were entertained by local favorites such as Jetta and the Jellybeans, an entire clown troop and were treated to a safety lesson by Sergeant Krause of the South Bend Police Department while being able to feast on a sponsored lunch of hamburgers, hotdogs and many other goodies tailored specifically to children. What was amazing was the participation and enjoyment of all who attended and contributed even in the rain, as seen in the pictures taken at the event by Cyd Galleries which you can view on this website under the Photo Gallery page.

Because of the many sponsors, contributors and volunteers, the event was a success and has spurred the next fundraising event to occur in the upcoming winter months. It promises to be equally successful and as this family hopes, even more so than the last.
